Becky Home Ecky NOT

Betty Crocker down through the years

1. What is the one appliance you simply couldn't be without?

My Keurig one cup coffee maker....YEAH BABY!

2. What if anything would you happily give up?

Probably my stove, because that would mean I ate out most of the time.

3. What is the most strangest household appliance you own?
My "Silver Bullet"--a glorified blender my son talked his father into buying me one Christmas, at the highest price possible. My son was sucked in by the "infomercial" marketing ploy. I was NOT HAPPY!

4. What is the most luxurious household appliance you own?

My dishwasher, since it uses so much water.

5. Tell us about your dream kitchen- the sky is the limit here....

Stainless steel commercial kitchen, with all the bells and whistles, including Sven a professional chef and cabanna boy.

Hello 50!

I was taken out for my birthday dinner on Saturday night to my favorite restaurant --132 Glen Bistro -- where I had the crab cakes, and an excellent clam and crab chowder. My son managed to surprise me by having a piece of key lime pie brought to our table accompanied by singing and a black candle.
My actual birthday was a nice, festive, easy beginning for this "Jubilee Year." It was sunny, warm, and it was a SUNDAY--which is the actual day of my birth!
Worship was good, with good attendance and participation, followed by cake and coffee given by the meeting to help me celebrate.
My husband wisely took my hint (me purchasing new clubs for him on his 50th)and bought me new golf clubs :)
There were many cards and several floral arrangements sent for me to look over again today.
We went to lunch with another family from the meeting where I was "surprised" with a candle lit dessert again. thank God others could help eat it, as my blood glucose level was already high from the birthday cake.
I also got to talk to family and friends on the phone all day, and to take a nap which is one of my favorite things to do on Sunday afternoon.
I concluded the evening by watching a DVD "Swing Vote" with my two favorite guys, and by finishing reading the book "Ghost at Work" by Carolyn Hart just before I went to sleep.

FF: Mid-Lent Check in

1. Did you give up, or take on, anything special for Lent this year?
I am trying to find ways to be helpful or friendly or kind to those I encounter as well as with pre-planned intentional acts.
2. Have you been able to stay with your original plans, or has life gotten in the way?
I have been able to find things almost daily in addition to completing those that I plan ahead for.
3. Has God had any surprising blessings for you during this Lent?

I guess my sense of and experience of continual joy in all circumstances.
4. What is on your inner and/or outer agenda for the remainder of Lent and Holy Week? To continue with planned and unplanned acts of kindness and to begin to live into my "Jubilee Year" (see earlier post!)
5. Where do you most long to see resurrection, in your life and/or in the world, this Easter? For the faces I encounter both in my community of faith and in the wider contexts of my life to be relieved of their stress and anxiety and grief and illness.

Bonus: Share a favorite scripture, prayer, poem, artwork, or musical selection that speaks Lenten spring to your heart.
*John Rutter's Gloria --as I listento this work in its entirety, I experience the lenten journey from recognition of my sinfulness to the joy of rebirth.

*A scripture that I have been called to in the past week or so is
Hebrews 10:31:
“It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

An unexpected pleasure

Last night my pre-celebration continued in unforeseen ways...While I always enjoy watching my son perform--he's a huge drama buff (as both an actor and spectator)--last night was special! This particular play was staged in a "dinner theatre" type setting. Audience participation and interaction with the performers was encouraged. To see the boy work the crowd while dressed as a female participant in a beauty pageant was very cool. He really does have a talent and energy that he conveys and shares well. Hard to believe that he'll be 17 in a few weeks--where HAS the time gone?!
Another surprise was that I, as the first person to submit the correct solution to the murder mystery this play entailed, won a lovely pearl necklace donated by a local jewelry store. Whoo Hoo!

OMG! Barbie and me; two peas in a pod. NOT!

I just realized that a very famous entity is also celebrating her 50th this week; today, in fact.
That would be Barbara Millicent Roberts, AKA Barbie!
She and I have NOTHING in common, except the same birth year.
Nuff said...

Some Barbie Fun Facts:

  • She and Ken Young met in 1961. They broke up after 43 years in 2004 and then reunited in 2006.

  • Barbie joined the Army in 1989

  • Barbie ran for president in 1992

  • At 50, Barbie is the world's highest earning doll, with $1.2 million in annual revenue

The pre-celebration celebration

Last night I kicked off the week preceding the big 5-0 by attending a hockey game. If you're wondering how a Quaker pastor can reconcile a hockey game with trying to live into the testimonies of my faith and practice, just let me say it's an anomaly of my personality. I LOVE hockey games; especially the physical rough housing--the body slams, elbowing and shoving, the fights.
This game was perfect--relatively high scoring with alot of shots on goal, a fight, just a few penalties, and skilled skating by both teams. I could do this every Sunday evening! It was topped off by being with a couple of my good friends who seemed to enjoy the game as much as I did. I can only hope that all the rest of my celebrations are this fun.

The Jubilee Year

One week from tomorrow, I will turn 50.

I am feeling mostly OK with that. Mildly apprehensive about the continuing of my aging process, but happy to have made it thus far just as I am now. I know I would not want to be 20 again, or even 30.
I have chosen to approach this as a "Jubilee Year". While I cannot afford to take a sabbatical --although last week at this time, I thought one may very well be part of my future as the meeting considered putting me at half time to remedy our financial problems-- or allow my land to lay fallow, I can seek actions, places, and people that will work to restore my being. "What does that mean?", I wonder. I guess I'm thinking of things that will continue to help me to find shalom in my personal and public life; in my ministry and where I am at home.

I do know that I would like to lose 50 more lbs. in the coming year; that I want to travel some to places I've never been; to hike one of the high peaks and kayak the rivers and lakes of the Adirondacks. I also want to spend quality time with my family, friends, aquaintances, and with people I've never met before. I also want to blog these events, I guess. To make a public witness about what restoration and shalom look like for me, as I live into this 50th year.
